#1 bring the right stuff

When you think of picnic essentials, you probably first think of a large blanket or a nice picnic table in the park. With a tablecloth or large throw from Clayre & Eef, you already have a perfect spot to sit! If you really want to get into the classic picnic vibe, Clayre & Eef has a square tablecloth that's white and red checkered with a beige border featuring cute little chickens, it doesn't get more classic than that! You can easily fold this up and take it with you in a large Clayre & Eef storage basket. Or, bring a set so someone else can carry some of the supplies. Often, you don't need special items to go on a picnic - that storage basket might have been sitting in the living room all along, and that tablecloth? It's probably on your table every evening. If you shop smart and choose items that can be used for multiple purposes, you can make the most of what you already have.

In addition to a (table)cloth and basket, you also need dishes to eat from. Milatonie.nl has a wide variety of different types of tableware. From plates in the shape of a sandwich to flowery porcelain. But a personal favorite for a picnic is definitely the Clayre & Eef tableware in green and pink, which looks like it's made of enamel, even though it's just ceramic. It adds that extra touch of outdoor living to your picnic!

#2 Don't get a wooden butt!

Many people only think of a tablecloth or throw to lay on the grass so they can sit on it. But of course, you'll get a wooden butt after a while. We love the chair cushions from Clayre & Eef. They come in all colors and patterns, from sleek grey to jungle flowers and fringes. And of course, they normally go on your garden chairs, but why not take them with you when you go picnicking! You can even tie them together (not knot) so you can easily pick them up and take them with you. For square garden cushions without tie strings, you can thread a belt through the carry loops for easy transport. That way, you can be sure to sit comfortably during the whole picnic.

If you have a pallet bench in the garden, you can even take the pallet cushion with you for a picnic. You can sit with multiple people on it or even take a nap. You can also find pallet cushions on Milatonie.nl, if needed.

#3 check your essential items

Having a good picnic can be spontaneous, but it's always helpful to make sure that you don't end up sitting on a grassy field with delicious spreads and baguettes, only to realize that the knife is still in the kitchen drawer. If that does happen to you, and you've forgotten all the cutlery, your debit card can serve as a makeshift spreader, or you can just dip your food. Here are the essential items for a successful picnic:

  • a (picnic) blanket or plaid to sit on
  • A large basket or set of baskets
  • Crockery (plates, bowls, cups, glasses)
  • Cutlery
  • Napkins
  • Garbage bag
  • A (cooler) bag for food
  • Food and drinks
  • A good location

And remember, it's better to keep it simple than to make it complicated. An afternoon by the water with a tasty sandwich from the gas station and some treats can sometimes make a more successful picnic than hauling your entire kitchen outside in a wagon.

#4 enjoying good food

Eating delicious food doesn't have to be complicated. A watermelon is already delicious on its own without having to add anything to it. But of course, you can cook to your heart's content for a delicious picnic, it's all about what you feel like. Life is already busy enough and it is absolutely not necessary to cook up a storm for a nice picnic outside. So even if you just get some tasty sandwiches and spreads, enjoy being outside and being together!

A few tasty snacks to make or bring for the picnic are, for example, a quiche, baguette with spreads, salads, watermelon, or simple vegetable snacks such as carrot and cucumber slices. And if you're going on a picnic with multiple people, don't make it too complicated! If everyone brings their own goodies, you'll have a sort of walking buffet of food on the blankets in no time! Delicious, right?

#5 a beautiful location

We can imagine that after 2 years of lockdown, you're done with picnicking in your own backyard or balcony. We want to go out and be outside again. A day of picnicking in a completely different environment is good for you. For example, you can choose to go picnicking in the forest, a short walk to an open space reduces stress and the forest is lovely to enjoy peace and for children to play. You can also go to the park, of course. And if there isn't too much wind, a picnic on the beach is also lovely. But on a windy day, the beach is less enjoyable. You always end up with sand in your sandwich. Now, of course, we have the typically Dutch saying "sand rubs the stomach," but it's not really enjoyable.

Wherever you go picnicking, always check to make sure you leave the place clean. That's why you brought the garbage bag. Just throw away all the papers, plastics, packaging, etc. in your garbage bag. But also fruit peels and other natural waste. You might think it can be thrown away in nature, but those things don't belong in nature either, so just throw them in your garbage bag, which you later throw in the trash can. This way, we keep nature clean and everyone can enjoy a clean picnic spot.
