Baroque

This style emerged around 1600, characterized by the use of exaggerated motion and vivid, intricate detailing that brought drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur to sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance, theater, and music. The style began in Rome and spread across most of Europe. Features of the Baroque style include materials such as exotic veneer and inlay work of tortoiseshell, ivory, and mother-of-pearl. Silk damask upholstery (a weaving technique where patterns are applied to a background of the same colour). Shaved velvet with busy patterns, gold and silver brocade, and embroidery. Elements like the "crest" on mirrors and cabinets. Ornamentation with lavish wood carvings in the form of animal claws, vases, crowns, fruits, or emblems. Applications of chandeliers and lamp candles made of glass, plastic, plexiglass, and stainless steel. One of the styles that originated from this also bears resemblance to the shabby chic style.
