The History of Tiffany Lamps

Around 1895, the first Tiffany lamp was designed and created by an artist named Clara Driscoll. At that time, Clara Driscoll was the director of Tiffany Studios in New York. She specialized in selecting colours and cutting glass. Signature designs like the daffodil, wisteria, dragonfly, and peony were created by Clara Driscoll herself and are still used to this day.

Subsequently, Louis Comfort Tiffany specialized in designing stained glass windows as part of his interior design company. Later, he began making stained glass lampshades for lighting fixtures, giving rise to an entire range of these lampshades known as Tiffany lamps.

Initially, Tiffany lamp designs were influenced by nature and considered part of the Art Nouveau style. They remained in fashion during the Art Deco period when geometric designs became more popular. It's a testament to all these designs that they remain stylish, current, and vibrant to this day.

How Is a Tiffany Lamp Made?

Every Tiffany lamp is made in the same way, by hand. They cannot be manufactured in any way mechanically or automated.

The Design Phase

First, a design is created by an artist. Once the design is approved, a full-size model of the lampshade is created. Typically, this is made of wood, but nowadays, the choice also goes to cardboard or plastic. The model is then covered with thick paper or cloth soaked in resin or glue to make it rigid. Once the paper or cloth is dry, it's removed, and each piece is cut out, numbered, and used as a template for each piece of glass that will be used in the fabrication.

Fabrication

Every Tiffany shade is made in exactly the same way using the foil method, whether it's a table lamp, ceiling lamp, wall lamp, or floor lamp. For each size, style, and type, a different mold is made, similar to a cobbler's last.

The mold is covered in wax, and each piece of glass is wrapped in copper foil and placed on the wax until the lampshade is formed. The pieces of glass are then hand-soldered together to form the lampshade. The final process involves carefully heating the wax until it melts, allowing the shade to be lifted off.

A good quality handmade Tiffany lamp will have a waxy feel and should be cleaned before the first use. This is not a defect or production issue; it's rather evidence of an excellent product made in the traditional way.

Why Are They So Expensive?

Most complex designs contain hundreds of pieces of glass and take a lot of time to make. Each piece of glass must be hand-cut and polished before being edged with foil and soldered in place. The more time it takes, the higher the labor costs.

Not all Tiffany lamps are made of the same materials. High-quality art glass is more expensive than mass-produced float glass, and some of the cheaper Tiffany lamps are not made of glass but rather plastic. A resin base is also cheaper to produce than a cast metal or cast brass base.

How Do I Care for My Tiffany Lamp?

When you first receive your lamp, it will have a thin layer of wax used during the manufacturing process. This should easily be wiped off with a solution of water and dish soap on a clean cloth and then dried with a soft cloth.

They require minimal maintenance to keep looking their best. A weekly dusting keeps the glass free from particles that can build up and hinder the effect. Wiping with a damp cloth twice a year is sufficient and keeps the glass looking radiant and performing at its best.

A simple tip to enhance the colours is to always use clear bulbs instead of pearl or opal bulbs. A clear bulb creates a sparkling effect through the coloured translucent glass of the table lamp. The clear bulb should also be dusted from time to time to get the best out of it. Never use an abrasive cleaner or a cleaner with a solvent or chemical on a Tiffany glass shade.
